I don't find photovoltaics a piece of cake right now. The stuff is ridiculously expensive! I would like to have it (we have a huge roof with the most wonderful southwest orientation, so we can catch sunlight all day), but the subsidies here are meager, the storage systems are disappointing, the feed-in tariff feels like a joke. With a heat pump, aquarium, and regular home office, we would even be good candidates to consume a decent amount of self-generated electricity during the day.

I now also hope for the time after the election, that relatively swift subsidies will be introduced that make a system profitable after 10 years.

It has already been said many times that you can simply finance it. You also build a house for more than 10 years, so why is it always such a big problem to calculate with 20 years for photovoltaics... Seriously unbelievable how everyone always makes a fuss. :(

Or compulsion for new buildings instead of subsidies for existing ones. You can imagine what that does to prices. It's too risky for me.

Especially, that is one of the reasons why I still want photovoltaics, even if the economics are tight over 20 years: The system doesn't just simply fall dead off the roof after 20 years ;)

true, the cells start to lose performance much earlier. I installed Kyocera panels 12 years ago when they were considered among the best (and still really expensive). I can’t measure the efficiency exactly, but they have definitely declined noticeably in output. Estimated to be about 70% of the initial value, although I try to clean them at least 4 times a year.

Exactly, that's factored into the economic viability as a reasonable pessimist.

Although 30% in 12 years is quite a lot. But it will not degenerate to zero, or even close to it.

And when the system is paid off, you still make a profit with 20% remaining ;)
