I have no knowledge of the subject, but I am a user with IT affinity and still perceived it as a crazy idea^^

Unless he is a rocket engineer for the Chinese. Then it was building rooms.

I haven’t read the entire thread, I lost interest after the first few posts. As a seasoned nerd, I’ll give my two cents:

At our place, a Raspberry Pi in the KNX cabinet is supposed to take on the role of the server. OwnCloud, OpenHAB, etc. run on it.

Replacing this with a proper server equipped with decent hardware and virtualization software (Hyper-V, ESXi, ...) would probably be the only "sensible" and cost-effective option for centralization. Nowadays, there are enough ways to access the VMs that hardly stand out (e.g., HDMI stick PC or a Raspberry Pi). The question is what you want to achieve with it; if you want the kids to be able to play as well, you need GPU virtualization (expensive) or the kids would have to switch to a shadow server (which would again be a cloud-based third party, but streaming services will probably be the future of gaming). In any case, I wouldn’t run a single cable for such a project. One recessed WLAN access point per floor is our motto.
