As someone who professionally deals with Virtual Desktops: Forget it. It will be too expensive and too complex. You would need: - 1 server on which you either run Windows Server with Remote Desktop Services or virtual (Windows) machines and corresponding software (Citrix or VMWare) - Terminals. Either thin clients (from IGEL or so) or old computers with corresponding software (IGEL again has something like that) Properly licensed, it will be more expensive than cheap computers (since every user still needs a corresponding Windows license or in the case of Remote Desktop Services a server license + a Terminal Services CAL), and the thin clients also cost money, plus the server Alternatively, you can get it from the cloud (e.g. Citrix Virtual Desktops Essentials on Azure) but even then the configuration effort is not worth it for a private household. If you want to keep it simple - how about iPads + keyboard & monitor instead of PCs?

No, you want 3-4 monitors in 4K. No ThinClient can do that! And: What does the ThinClient access? I'll tell you: A server. That is missing in your calculation. :p

Sure! In the planning for the new house, I have 2x intake and 2x exhaust from the controlled residential ventilation system for the small room where the rack is located. That then nicely runs through the heat exchanger :) But whether it actually brings any measurable benefit, I doubt.

Such a small server room is quite something. You quickly reach 1000W, and since it runs continuously, it also gives off a lot of heat. But the heat gain in winter is probably offset by the air conditioning in summer.

There was no guideline for the budget, so great: solution found, costs about 20k. Since we don't know the rest of the house, it could well be that the item was calculated that way.

I suspect the OP actually prefers a cheaper solution. But then the question is whether the requirements are really that high.
