Strange, everyone involved in this discussion assumes the question is about burglary protection, although only break-resistant glass was asked about.

I don't work at the "source," so I'm not a burglar, but I am a service provider for our security and order. And thus, broken glass almost exclusively only occurs as vandalism in public buildings; criminals who want to get at gold and cash in an apartment or house use other methods.
And that's why I asked the original poster, because nothing about the question seemed conclusive to me.

More likely, the intruder slips in unnoticed through the opened patio door while one is briefly working in the garage.

Of course, I have not installed any intentional weaknesses, and here and there there are small measures. Losing keys or other emergencies occur more often than a break-in. At least in our case. As someone already wrote, all measures not only keep burglars out.

I had also briefly informed myself about appropriate glass but quickly discarded it. We are insured, have attentive neighbors, and break-ins are unusual in this area.

Maybe I just lack imagination, but what other background should the question have? If someone smashes the pane for me, it has to be replaced – whether it lies on the floor or hangs in the film makes no difference. And if it was even my own offspring, the fun just ends up costing me extra money.

Exactly that - without a break-in background. Back then it was the soccer ball, today perhaps the step ladder, the neighbor's son, the accident. I find it quite exaggerated to take precautions for something that happens very rarely and is then possibly insured. But I seem to remember that the OP is always good for filling the summer slump.

That is the problem with every security: if you "overdo" it, the risk of locking yourself out also increases – or in other words: the likelihood that someone installs a security bypass for themselves. Then the burglar only has to guess whether to look for the spare key under the doormat or under the flowerpot.

...or you leave the key with the neighbor, under the cushion in the basket where the Great Dane sleeps...
