Maybe it was also because we got the designs for free, since half of my relatives are self-employed craftsmen.

It always depends on how you build. Our house concept developed over weeks/months to get the best out of the plot. We had several different concepts and today I would not decide for or against an architect based on a first concept alone. The first concept was absolutely not suitable for us, even with the concept which it ultimately became, he had to convince us on a few things (Today I am very happy with it). We knew what kind of houses our architect builds, visited one of them in advance, and then we were hooked. We only went to the initial meeting with pictures of houses we liked and a list of wishes (budget, size, number of bathrooms, heating, etc.) and gave/give him complete freedom... After all, the good man has studied long enough and gained professional experience. Our architect wants it that way too and chooses his clients accordingly... The success proves him right.
