First of all, how old are the children? How often do they still come? There is a difference whether the children will come as a group of three every other weekend and half of the holidays for the next 5 years, or if they will probably only come occasionally anyway. How likely is it that a child will move in with you? It wouldn’t be the first time this has changed.

Take a look at the concept by

I wouldn’t build a classic house with 2-3 children's rooms. Probably a nice small house for 1-2 people + an annex that can be used individually. Just like with or flying space by Schwörerhaus

The kids are in "younger teenage age," the youngest not quite a teenager yet. Currently, I live within cycling distance to my ex-wife (meaning: 1.5 km), the children are with me 3-4 times a week, often for dinner after school – due to Corona, I am currently often working from home (they like to just drop by, regularly sleep here). The new plot is about 10 km away; for me personally, it would be better for various reasons to create some distance, for the kids certainly not – but that is another topic, for another forum ;)

Would a child move in with me? Time will tell. It also depends a lot on my future professional development. I would certainly want to plan with at least one guest/children's room, a large office (which can also be used for overnight stays).

Thanks for the hint about the user.

You have to find the best way for all of you. Hampshire is the only one I can think of now that has a concept that brings everything together. The other builders are couples without children or families. Neither fits. You just have to see what your property allows. It may be that you have to build a gable roof house or have no other choice but a classic family house.

It's all a matter of money ...

Clearly not. Money is a necessary means of design, nothing more. More important is the setting of priorities, because from that arise the goals, considerations, and exactly the decisions.

I do think that one needs to be financially prepared for several (own) houses in life ... Even the first own house is a financial challenge for most builders. (my post #22 also refers to post #13 by [USER=13519]@K1300S)
