Water scarcity is always a local problem. Large cisterns can bypass the problem. The faucet does not have enough pressure and flow. Better cistern or well with a large pump. There are many options for control. The individual sprinklers must reach each other. Watering in the early morning hours (4-6 am). The soil is cool, does not evaporate immediately but the lawn is not wet for long, which prevents diseases. The lawn mixture is also important. From needs a lot of water to less water. Prefer to water long and less frequently. Forget Gardena in this area. Prefer Hunter, Rainbird or Perrot.

But that depends on the soil. With our sandy soil, the clover-weed lawn also needs water every 2 to 3 days, otherwise it turns brown.

On the one hand, I doubt that. Most lawn mixtures are made up of very vigorous grasses, and whoever grows a lot needs a lot of water. Just look at the composition of a typical mixture; you have two-thirds ryegrasses and often hybrids of them. A little immigrated clover does not make it a herb lawn, because the vigorous grasses are still there. A real herb lawn is something else. Many – mostly deep-rooted and much less susceptible herbs – and not so vigorous grasses. Mowing high and infrequently also helps during drought. Before I dealt with the topic, it was not clear to me how many differences there are in something seemingly simple like lawn.
On the other hand… if it were true that you absolutely have to water every 2-3 days, then that is simply the completely wrong planting for the location.

Or you simply water every 2 to 3 days in the dry months. One (or at least we) want to walk and sit on the meadow as well. And preferably barefoot. That doesn’t work with tall and/or only herbs. In our sand, all plants need water more often than in clay or other firmer soil. Except cacti etc. But it’s bad for walking there.

Those are the ones who don't want to be seen wasting water. It recovers as well.

when you look at the groundwater levels, water scarcity is not a local problem. Still, I'm asking for a friend who is into perfect lawns. Fits here because it's about lawns. In short: I need an automatable irrigation system both for areas (lawns) and spot-wise (plants). It should be demand-dependent, i.e., with a moisture sensor. I have an existing HomeAssistant home automation to which I can connect it, I could integrate it. WLAN, Zigbee, and Thread are available. A cistern is present but not as big as yours, Rick. There is herb lawn seed that divides Germany into 4 regions. There is apparently no one that fits all.
