With us, everything also went very quickly... from the interest in building a house to completion, it also took only 16 months.

I top it off. Planning starts after the land purchase 01.2014 and move-in expected 02./03.15... That’s possible and I’ll be glad when we’re in. Because it’s just mega stressful. :o

End of 2011: Search for existing property in Mainz started.
End of 2012: Mission abandoned due to disillusionment after viewing various "ruins" and concluded that apparently nothing affordable AND acceptable was for sale in the Mainz city area.
Mid-2012: Informally reserved a plot of land on the edge of a field in a new development area yet to be developed (yuck, how bourgeois :D) slightly outside the city and started visiting show home parks. At that time still without concrete intentions to actually build, as we first had to get used to the building plot in the middle of the vineyards "in the countryside."
End of 2012: Got accustomed after several visits and walks in the area and started implementing the then already very concrete idea of the floor plan on our own and with some potential partners.
Summer 2013: Signed contract for work
Winter 2013/2014: Construction start
09.11.2014: Move-in

Well, it makes little sense to write down individual construction times here, as it depends on personal circumstances how long such a build takes. You have to plan for at least 1 year; anything else is guesswork. If your husband is often not on site, it is important to have proper site management, and by that I don’t mean the developer’s employee. Without grandparents to support you, you won’t be able to do much yourselves, unless you want to tie your child to the construction stairs to be able to paint in peace :-) Here you should just budget for a professional painter/floor layer. And building with an architect would not be the first choice either. Unless you can and want to drag your child everywhere, from the architect to the window maker and to the tile studio... you save yourself a lot of stress and running around if you go to the sample selection and leave the child with the grandparents in the meantime. I don’t quite understand your last point, what do you mean by "not living alone in the house later"?

What should you avoid during the construction stress so that it doesn't lead to a separation. :)
