We are currently dealing with this question as well. Our architect refuses to use a Ytong stone or a porous stone. These need to be protected from driving rain (as long as they are not yet plastered) and absorb water. He recommends bricks or a concrete composite stone with insulating beads instead. This is also lighter than bricks and provides good insulation. The only advantage of Ytong stones is their good insulating ability and the quick building-up since they are light.

But I mean 99% of new buildings have exterior walls made of aerated concrete. If the risk that the aerated concrete stone soaks up rainwater when it rains and "breaks" or significantly reduces in quality is that high, then almost all new buildings would have to be declared as rejects, wouldn't they???

My main concern was whether the interior walls should preferably be made of sand-lime brick or not... In my opinion, the advantages are significantly better sound insulation, because the thermal insulation inside the house through aerated concrete is certainly of secondary importance? Because if the house is not well insulated on the outside, well-insulated interior walls won't help me anymore, right???

The good sound insulation effect of sand-lime bricks for interior walls refers to the noise produced inside the house in the adjacent room: flushing toilets, loud music, children’s shouting....

It is supposedly more important for exterior walls to have good thermal insulation. The additional outer insulation and, if applicable, the facing brick also contribute to sound insulation.
A house provider told us that KS exterior walls are only sensible for sound insulation reasons in cases of very loud external noise – that is, urban locations.

Hello,

When I read such statements - especially coming from architects - it really gets my goat. The only thing missing is that he recommends an ETICS to you.

This architect of yours is afraid of settlement cracks, proper execution, and nothing else. If what he told you were true, all construction projects of recent years, of this kind which we have sold and built, would still be fought out in court today.

If you read the links posted by E.Curb, you will realize that there is no "ultimate" stone for all types of construction projects alike. Every material has its pros and cons, and ultimately it is always a personal construction decision which stone to use.

Kind regards from the Rhineland

Hello!

The emotional reactions to this topic are always interesting.

Of course, proper construction execution must be assumed - however, some materials make errors much easier.

My personal opinion on

Aerated concrete is only an option for a cavity wall - sound insulation rather limited. Advantages: Insulates quite well. No drill needed.

Bricks are probably the "jack of all trades." Sound insulation okay, insulation okay (with proper execution). Structure-borne noise, however - at least in my house - is terrible.

KS My actual favorite; I still have so many Fischer plugs . No great insulation, so no monolithic wall possible. Best sound insulation. Best statics.

Conclusion: KS great, bricks okay, aerated concrete = compressed cat litter - and now everyone can complain.

Best regards,
Tomtom.
