We have a normal lock with a key on the front door. When leaving, we don't have to lock it separately, but just close the door, as it automatically locks with triple locking. For the garage door, in addition to the remote controls, we also have a PIN code pad as an emergency solution in case we forget the key. Then, in an emergency, one can enter the house through the garage. I'm just curious how long the batteries in the PIN code pad will last. So far, they last about 6 1/2 years.

Ok, then I probably misunderstood / used the term incorrectly. We currently have exactly this lock in our offer. I would have now classified everything that somehow works with electricity under the category motor lock (I would have thought a motor pulls the lock back when you press the opener), but there are probably differences there as well. In any case, as far as I understand it, with this type of lock there is also a (rather high) surcharge compared to "normal" locks.

There are purely motorized locks that lock and unlock mechanically. And there are mechanically locking locks that lock themselves when the door leaf is pulled into the frame. These can optionally be equipped with an A-opener (motor). Thus, the locks lock mechanically and then open motorized via intercom, fingerprint, keyboard ... In addition, the locks can always be opened from the outside with a key and from the inside with a door handle.

I can't say how high the surcharge is. However, I can give you a total price for the retrofit, as we are currently having such a GU-Security automatic panic lock with A-opener retrofitted into our door. However, this is probably somewhat more expensive than if it is done right away during new construction. According to the offer, the multi-point locking with A-opener, including cable routing from the door frame via concealed cable transition to the A-opener, comes to about €1400-1500. I think a normal lock with multi-point locking including installation would certainly be easily in the range of €700-1000. The goal is also to operate the whole thing here via fingerprint and RFID through the video intercom system. To test it, I previously equipped the garage with a fingerprint/RFID system and connected it to the electric gate opener. That is doable with manageable financial means.

So friends of ours had this automatically locking lock and it was super annoying because it always locked itself when you closed the door, even from the inside. When the kids wanted to go in 10 times a day, it was annoying. You always had to unlock it with the knob. But admittedly, that was an older model. Maybe the operation is a bit friendlier nowadays (e.g. only locks when pulling the door closed from the outside without pressing the door handle or automatically unlocks when pressing the door handle from the inside - which on the other hand is concerning in case of a break-in attempt). How is it with the modern versions?

What do you mean by "unlock the knob"?

We have a motorized lock in our new build.

You pull the door shut and the motorized lock locks automatically. If you press the door handle down, the door opens (without having to unlock it separately or anything).

How else does the child get out of the door without operating the door knob? The child ultimately always has to do that, right?

Ultimately, for me there is nothing more comfortable than just going in and out without having to do anything with the key or having to think about anything.

Ideally even with fingerprint (that's how it is with us). Hold your finger outside, go in, slam the door shut and done :D
