Hello,

we don't like the color of the existing staircase. I guess it is beech. We would really like a white staircase (steps + railing).

I have attached a photo as it is now. Is it possible to sand the staircase and white glaze/stain it? So that the grain is preserved or still shows through?

Regards,
Volkmann

Hello,

Your photo appears blurry to me, at least.

Best regards,
Joe

Maybe try without Tapatalk, it works perfectly

Regarding the question:

Of course, you can sand wooden surfaces so that they absorb stain.
Even beech stairs are just made of wood
Still, I would find it ungrateful to do it yourself... and would only recommend it if you can get the stairs outside in separate parts.
Also, I would first try it on the underside of one step – sand it so that an absorbent surface is created, apply stain according to instructions, possibly repeat, and then later seal with a matte varnish, ideally a varnish for high-wear surfaces.
There are also varnish stains... I would suggest stopping by the painter’s specialty market and asking.
I once worked with boat varnish (not on a stair); it was high-gloss but resisted everything Maybe there is also matte now? Anyway:
There is stair varnish after all.

Hmm, sounds good. At least I can hear that it is not impossible.

Why do you advise us to do that outside? Because of dust or because of smell (or both)? We wanted to do it before moving in anyway. Possibly I could do it in the workshop in the basement there.

because of the dust, yes. And dismantled, since otherwise you can't get to the edges. I would always sand outside, because of the dirt, the particles are hard to get out of joints, etc. Is it a staircase in a used property?

I would definitely ask at the paint specialty store despite my recommendation (you can do everything nowadays). Not at the hardware store (no expertise) and not at the staircase specialist (because they will just advise you to get a new staircase or possibly discourage you). The components stain and varnish have to be compatible with each other. The grain will, however, still be beech.

You mean the texture? No problem, we don't really know much about types of wood anyway. The main thing is that it actually looks like wood.

Yes, it is a pre-owned property.

Is it even possible to take the staircase apart? Here’s another photo. Somehow it looks like the steps "support each other." At least I don't see any metal frame to which the steps could be screwed. Or I just don’t quite understand the construction.
