Without a basement - where to put the workshop/hobby room (pictures?)

Hello everyone,

we want to build a single-family house and until recently thought that we absolutely needed a basement. But we are slowly moving away from that idea because we both know from our parents that the risk is high that the basement will be used as a storage room for all kinds of stuff that will never be needed again.

Therefore, we are now redesigning to build without a basement.

Since I like to tinker (whether with wood or electronics), I would like to have a small workshop where I can pursue my hobby undisturbed.

Has anyone of you implemented such a hobby room in the utility or technical room? If yes, can someone maybe show me pictures? Of course, you can also put a hobby room in a slightly larger garage, but it would be nicer if it were in the house, since it would be warmer, etc.

If anyone has suggestions on how to realize this simply and effectively, please share.

You don't have to turn the basement into a junk room if you give the rooms appropriate uses. We don't really have a storage closet there - at most under the stairs. Otherwise, the attic will be the junk room. I also have a workshop in the basement - with underfloor heating, an extra exit upstairs, and a shower bathroom with a toilet next door - I'm really looking forward to my cave.

A dream. I would like to have that too. Unfortunately, here it is only possible with a white tank. Cost estimate from the architect for a living basement: 90,000 EUR.

So now the garage is becoming significantly larger and will have an approximately 15 sqm hobby room (insulated and heated).

Regards, Steffen

As much as you all write here, in the end you just stay in the living room anyway

An acquaintance has set up a really nice and large workshop in his garage. I think the solution is brilliant since it prevents noise and dust inside the house. Another option would be to convert the attic and set up a nice workshop there. However, the downside is that you sometimes have to go up or down two floors and you don't have direct access to the outside if you want to, for example, saw something outdoors. And a third option is the famous garden shed. You can also turn that into a workshop.

We are planning to have a basement, but my workshop will be back in the garage. Basement is all well and good, but that's only for fair-weather mechanics. Just for fun, clamp a 250 cm strip in the vise. For something like that, you need space and room to maneuver.
