Hello everyone,

we have bought a house from the developer and are currently working on the electrical planning. After reading quite a bit in the forum regarding video intercom systems, one question still remains open for me.

Our electrician has now offered to lay a Cat 7 cable from the house connection room in the basement to the front door or the doorbell. In addition, two connection points for intercom stations are to be installed, one on the ground floor and one on the upper floor. (I assume that simply two more Cat7 cables will be pulled to the respective points, but I don’t know for sure)

My question now is: Isn’t it sufficient if we do the wiring of the doorbell to the house connection room and then install the intercom stations somewhere in the house via radio / Wi-Fi, or are there such options without cloud-based services?

I’m not quite sure if it matters, but we have a motor lock on the front door.

Since TKS systems are often still proprietary nowadays and practically every manufacturer does their own thing, it ultimately depends on what you want to use exactly. So if you know what is coming, we can also say exactly what is needed.

I would definitely include Cat. That way you already cover many options. Otherwise, the remark from applies.

No, it is not enough. There are radio intercom units or ones via Wi-Fi, but for the latter your Wi-Fi coverage must be absolutely flawless, really good. Have you already thought about the LAN/Wi-Fi topic or is your scenario more like "The Fritzbox is somewhere in the connection room, that should be enough"?

First of all, thank you for the feedback.

Regarding the topic of LAN/WLAN, we have already given it some thought. We have planned a connection for an access point on each floor (basement, ground floor, upper floor; attic). We have not yet decided which system we will use, but we still have about 9-10 months until moving in. Therefore, the WLAN coverage should be stable.

Overall, it is of course simply a question of cost. The extra charge for 2 connections for the monitors / intercoms is €280 plus VAT. After doing further research, I might be more flexible in terms of system selection and could possibly save another €100 - 200.

If you still have a landline, you can also use it as an intercom system with SIP systems. These doorbells are available, for example, from Akuvox.
