That is all a matter of taste. You have to be aware that you hear the noises (Abendessen mit Freunden, Silvester etc.) upstairs and that it all takes place in the dining room.

In the new house, we deliberately decided against a gallery because a) we want and need to use the space and b) the open staircase in the dining area already bothers us.

With small children, you are always afraid of being too loud, and with older children, you don't want to hear everything from upstairs... I am just thinking of my music volume back then

Hello Chris,

This question cannot be answered in a generalized way, as you have already noticed from the responses.

I have planned and built many galleries for clients. From this experience – and of course subjectively – I would avoid a gallery as long as children are planned or living in the house. Children – as well as adults, if the possibility exists – are lazy. It is not uncommon for the gallery to develop into a communication center. Example, experienced live: Child from above: "Mom, how does the game xyz continue?" Mother from below: "At the spot behind the tree there is a knot hole, you have to click there, then you get to the next level!" It is especially charming when guests are visiting

It does not matter whether the gallery is over the usually rear living area or the front hall area. The chance for shortened communication is used; from both sides.

Rhenish regards

So at the moment during the construction phase, the short communication route also has various advantages
And drywall profiles can be transported time-savingly from top to bottom or vice versa over it
Ok, that was certainly not the reason why we decided on it. You just have to be aware of the disadvantages and come to terms with them, then it will work out.
And the appearance is quite important to both of us, maybe we'll see it a bit differently in 15 years but does anyone really know that???

No, you read it wrong:

Yes, we have everything open to the roof in the living area, the stairs lead to a gallery room.

The look and stylishness were also extremely important to us...
If we ever sell, it would be a house for 2 or 3 people. The child would always have their own space on the ground floor and not upstairs. So, the screaming communication thing isn’t really an issue.

That is a clear statement, even if it dampens my enthusiasm for galleries.

Thank you.

We had a gallery in the living/dining room above the dining area. It was partly one of the reasons why we sold the house again. We are currently building new and only have a small gallery in the entrance area due to the brightness upstairs.

The main reason why we no longer want a gallery in the living area is that our children wanted to sleep upstairs and this was not possible when guests were visiting. But heating is not to be neglected either.
