I was hoping for other feedback

I just uninstalled DSM/Surveillance Station because I switched the (self-built) NAS to OMV (previously xpenology).
What really bothered me about DSM was the motion detection. It did not work reliably. Events were missing or the recording started too late (despite the corresponding pre-record setting) and there were many false triggers, I believe due to loud outdoor noises. The zoning function also never really worked properly, that was my impression.

Use the Surveillance Station on QNAP and Synology. Both have been running for me for years! continuously and without errors. Cameras in mixed operation AXIS as well as "Dahua Chinaware"

Most NAS from Q and S include 2 camera licenses, the more expensive models also 4.

I have set the motion detection quite sensitive because there is enough space on the NAS. Can look back more than 1 year.

To watch from outside, I use DS Cam. For me it is only about "evidence" not as an intrusion alarm system etc.

I am more than satisfied with it for my purposes. Simply practical, good, reliable.

I had a real NVR from QNAP before. Unfortunately, it only allowed 2TB HDDs (=5.5TB net with 4x2, which was too little for me), and there were no more firmware updates. That is why it is gone now.

At turm.tech there are also recorders that work as well. But long-term durability still needs to be proven. Already 2 failures out of a few delivered :-(

Since you use both manufacturers (QNAP and Synology): Which manufacturer can you recommend? I am still looking for an entry-level NAS. Application area: recording 2-3 cameras and backing up my MacBook.

Technically it doesn't matter much, I personally find the software at Synology (DSM) much more pleasant than at QNAP (QTS).

Surveillance Station is better on Synology, overall Synology is "more pleasant". In virtualization, the small QNAPs are stronger than the Synologys. Motion detection on the NAS affects performance. Especially on "small" systems, this can be crucial. With high-quality cameras, the internal camera detection is significantly better and does not impact the NAS performance. Here we are talking about cameras in the 300€ range and up. Alternatively, an NVR could be used and the NAS only as a data repository. Good NVRs (4k, multiple cameras...) also cost money. Another option is, for example, the software from AXIS. Recording then on a network drive. For HDMI output, there are gateways. However, this only works with AXIS cameras... Or just have each camera record to the network drive. For viewing, there are some apps that allow you to integrate different manufacturers and cameras.

I am planning a Synology NAS 218+ for the cameras. Compared to the NVR, I can do other things with it as well.
