Which surface for the garage door?

Hello,

we are currently looking for a suitable prefabricated garage. Actually, we wanted an anthracite-colored sectional door in "woodgrain," that wood look. This was also recommended to us by a garage builder (you can better repair scratches). Another garage builder now advises us against "woodgrain," saying it would lead to ugly reflections in anthracite, and we should rather choose a smooth surface.
What kind of surface do you have on your garage door?

Best regards
Sabine

Fake wood looks even more ridiculous to me when it comes in metal tones. Up close, it somehow looks like recycled park bench. There really is no such thing as fancy plastic.

I have seen this wood look quite often in anthracite and didn't notice that it somehow looks strange, I haven't looked at it very closely now either. Wanted to hear your opinion, what kind of surface did you use in anthracite?

Best regards
Sabine

Well, I wouldn't call it strange. There may be people who can look at surfaces without any materials science considerations. I know that you cannot imprint wood grain on sheet metal and that plastic granulates do not come in metallic colors (i.e., you then have to work with coatings that hardly promise decades of enjoyment in terms of abrasion resistance). Therefore, to me, such a "plastic pretending to be wood with metallic-colored glaze" gate always looks fake and resembles, in my opinion, the stuff used for screwing onto balcony railings.

For anthracite-colored surfaces, I always recommend aluminum. My own garages are rented; I have the classic Hörmann Berry in cream white and deer brown. Of course, these would be impossible for the designer house.

I know nothing about the surface that describes, had to google first what this weird woodgrain is supposed to be, and can say: We have this relief structure as an anthracite sectional door, and it looks noble and good. M-rib goes without saying. In brief, greetings

That wasn’t me, that was Curly. I also had to google it first, then saw what it is (I knew it, just didn’t have a name for it) and then said that I find it ugly.

If you can look at the surface without the “isn’t-real” feeling, it initially looks good, but for material science reasons I consider this effect to be durable only to a limited extent, which in my opinion is not adequate for the price advantage compared to real metal (which I would never want to emboss as “wooden” purely for aesthetic reasons).

My two cents on the topic of “anthracite-colored building components” are that other trends have also been ephemeral. Once people were so modern with glass bricks, today you can tell the age (simply meaning the year of construction) of otherwise well-maintained houses by them.
