With our general contractor (GU) we also had no difficulties at all and are very satisfied.
However, the tiler he subcontracted recently has an employee who does not work as precisely as he does himself. Unfortunately, we were the first for whom he laid tiles. The bathroom had to be redone and in my eyes it still isn’t really nice today. Strangely, he did a great job on the ground floor, where the tiles were even larger.
Our GU then had trouble with this employee at another construction site as well, and by now he completely refuses to work with him. Well, we just got unlucky that we caught him.
The biggest trouble we have is with the glazier, whom we hired ourselves but who was recommended to us by the GU. The work itself is okay, but he apparently has a lousy supplier for safety glass. All the glasses delivered so far are defective and this has been dragging on since early July. We will probably demand replacement of all glasses installed so far (and the defect is really so egregious that there is no need to debate it). This is quite annoying. I think the glazing company may have taken on a task beyond their capacity. We also received mirrors from them, about which we have no complaints at all, but whether we ever get our glass railing exactly the way we want it remains to be seen.
Here too it is very embarrassing for the GU that we took the glazier based on his recommendation, but oh well...
Plumbing: the installer from the GU crew told us: order the stuff yourselves on the internet, you get it cheaper there. We ordered in consultation with him and it worked out well for us.
