Hello everyone, I don’t know if I’m in the right subforum, but I have a question and can’t find a suitable answer on Google etc. I have pine wood chairs from Ikea (see photo). We have oak parquet flooring and an oak table (relatively dark). The color character of the natural pine chairs does not match. I initially wanted to whitewash them, but I didn’t like it. Now I have arrived at an oak-colored stain. The tone would fit well. But I’m not sure if a stain is the right choice for a dining chair. What do you think? Alternatively, I have also got a lacquer stain, which is a little darker. However, I’m afraid that after a few years everything will look like "shabby style." We already have that with chairs (see photos... but those are already 15 years old). Also, I want to prevent the chairs from chipping when they hit the wall. That looked terrible in our old apartment.
At the hardware store, the salesman wanted to sell me a thick-layer stain for windows and doors. But that doesn’t sound very plausible to me. What do you think?

Of course, a glaze can be suitable, but what matters is how it is composed, or rather, which ingredients are not included. So: for indoor use / for furniture suitable should at least be stated on the can. Also important is resistance to abrasion and to water and alcohol. If all that is given, it is certainly an option to paint the chairs. However: pine is pine, after all. And even if the color tone fits, it is still a different wood, which you will always see. Therefore, I would tend to buy matching oak chairs, especially since some are already available on the market for under 100 euros each.

Oiling could still be an option if it is important to you to preserve the grain. Otherwise, is of course right, pine will never look like oak. I would therefore prefer to go with contrast. Nothing is worse than having five different wood tones in a room. Better to choose a solid color right away. So acrylic paint and then just a color that you like.
