Hello,

We bought an old house, built in 1980, north of Munich. The builder passed away about 10 years ago, and the widow, who sold it to us, has done nothing in the garden during that time and unfortunately cannot help us with questions.

We are now trying to clear the garden a bit and see what we can make of it.

In the process, I noticed a pipe sticking out of the lawn - see first photo. The pipe is hollow and deep. It is not an umbrella stand as initially suspected; with the measuring tape I reached a depth of 2 meters, and there was still no bottom! Dry.

Apart from the initial report by the colleagues, obviously Fritzl cellar (I am Austrian...), we have no idea what it could be.

Does anyone have an idea?

Furthermore, we have found at least three round concrete covers (?) in the lawn so far (photo 2). On one stood a heavy flowerpot, the others are overgrown. Are these simply foundations for pots, or what are they? No handle, opening, or anything else visible.

Thanks for the help!

About the pipe:
although for 50s/60s houses, but who knows, maybe done here too: such pipes were embedded, often in cement or concrete, so that carpet beating rods or similar could be screwed in there. Or something like that… no guarantee on my info.

About the covers, these are covers for some kind of shafts. They can be old cesspit shafts, but also wastewater or rainwater. The covers have no handles, at most they are for when someone needs to get in there. Our covers have been in place for 9 1/2 years and it’s good that they don’t need to be opened.
You may move, open and see what is underneath them :)

I had also considered a [Wäschespinne] etc., but not over 2 meters? That might be a bit too much? I need to measure how deep it actually is.

Well, it has to hold up when the wind tugs at the 2m high rotary clothesline above ground. If it really just sticks in the ground without a foundation...

The iron pipe looks like the old well at our place. Tie a stone to a string and lower it down, if it comes up wet, one could next try to connect a garden pump. The concrete cover could be anything and nothing. Clear around it and see what is underneath.
