In the old house, we dug a well hole - the soil and groundwater level allowed it and 9m was more than enough. Simple submersible pump into the slotted pipe and done. It didn't cost 500, including two helpers with a percussive drilling device. Now we would have to drill through about 30m of graywacke stone, we'll skip that and collect rainwater instead.

??? Small garden ??? 1,000€ (is already generous) corresponds to about 650 cubic meters at 1.50€/cbm. In summer, we poured about 2-4 cubic meters daily in the garden with approximately 600 sqm garden area (generously lawn + beds). We formally had the well water run through a water meter. In the three years we used the house, about 200 cubic meters passed through the meter. With the well, you are already more flexible and could also just fill the pool for the kids (and if the water turns bad, several times a year). That takes huge amounts of water and/or you can water as much as you want. P.S. Our well cost only about 550€ a few years ago (2015?). 9m including piping and deep well pump. We would have earned back the well price after 8-10 years (without big pool parties).

But the power consumption for the pump still needs to be factored in. Otherwise, I also suspect that a well will pay off more quickly than a cistern, which will probably cost between 10,000 and 20,000 EUR if sufficiently large. I will look into it.

570 sqm plot. 30 cubic meters per year has been enough for us so far. But we also don't have a pool or anything like that.

What kind of gardens do you have that you water so much? Sure, with a new installation it needs more, but then? I get most of my water from the village well with watering cans

It depends on the size. Just let the lawn sprinkler run for half an hour every day in summer (like it has been in recent years). A lawn sprinkler consumes on average 1 cubic meter per hour (for 250sqm of lawn). If guckuck2 waters his 250sqm lawn on 50 days during the summer, that's already 25 cubic meters gone. More lawn = more water. Plus watering the flowerbeds. Take my formerly 600sqm garden. 1,000 liters per day is no problem in summer. I just have to run two lawn sprinklers. Of course, it can also be done with much less water. But the lawn and plants will thank you. And if I can, then I just do it. It’s like with all things in life. Why do you do it? Because I can.
