That is common. For formats larger than 30x60, the installation effort is significantly higher to lay the large tiles evenly. With "small formats", they are laid and leveled by tapping. This only works to a limited extent with large ones. Here, significantly more effort is required for the substrate, adhesive, etc. We pay an additional 20€ per sqm here.

But the additional price list is even longer with the tilers:

Floor tiles and wall: +XX Euro/sqm Tiles with rectified edge: + XX Euro/sqm ....

This is also the statement from my tiler.

Up to 30x60, he tiles everything alone; anything larger only with a second man. We have 60x120...

With a tile twice as big, he can of course take twice as long, since the same amount of time is needed per unit area. Waste and such basically don’t matter anyway, since often the tiles are provided by the construction company and they generously calculate waste. In angled rooms, that’s naturally not so easy to calculate. I consider laying all the slabs to be a money-making scheme in terms of cost. Sure, it takes longer per slab, but you also have to lay significantly fewer slabs. The edges are probably more difficult, where a lot more has to be cut with large tiles. And with large tiles, there are also more edge tiles.

We have 120x60cm as a kitchen backsplash. The tiler groaned at that.

30x60 to 60x120 is not twice as big. The material price is also more expensive per sqm because you need the material first.

Hi,

well, for 20 € more per sqm, it must take at least 20-30 minutes longer per sqm. And I seriously doubt that it is that much.

I just looked up tile adhesives for fun, the cheapest are around 0.80 € /kg for tiles, (at 1-2 kg /sqm so 0.8-1.6 €) the expensive ones a bit over 2 €/kg, so max 4 € /sqm. So you can easily justify a 3-4 €/sqm surcharge for porcelain stoneware, but not 12.5 €/sqm.

Stupid question, is porcelain stoneware always rectified? I just noticed that here they only want a surcharge for rectified wall tiles. For the floor tiles (rectified porcelain stoneware here) it seems to be irrelevant?!?

I’m curious, we’re meeting with the tile people again on Saturday, in the end we might redo the entire tile planning…

Tiles are just annoying, too bad you can’t install parquet in the bathroom!

Best regards,

Andreas
