Hello,

while looking for wall claddings, I came across this interesting forum.

I saw such claddings made of polyurethane at a friend’s place. I had to tap on them to make sure it wasn’t natural stone. This wall covering looks very natural and beautiful. And even people with two left hands probably shouldn’t have any problems installing it.

But I am worried about the isocyanates contained in polyurethane. Upon request, the manufacturer informed me as follows:

That sounds plausible, but what is allowed to be sold does not have to be good and healthy, see glyphosate and other things.

Is what the dealer said true or should I avoid this wall covering?

Regards

Seriously? Have you ever really dealt with chemistry?

There are no isocyanates contained in polyurethane. Isocyanate is a starting material for polyurethane and no longer present as "individual" molecules in the material itself. Yes, isocyanates should not be eaten or drunk, but you don't want to lick it daily, and besides, they have reacted into a macromolecule. You should also not eat iron, copper, and silver, yet we use metal cutlery daily without thinking about it. As soon as it says plastic, it suddenly becomes dangerous. Plastic only becomes dangerous if it decomposes or rots, but even then you have to differentiate very precisely. You are considering whether to install wall stones made of polyurethane that will then also be painted. What could possibly happen? What do you think the elephant skin that you spread on kitchen wallpaper consists of? What are many food seals made of (it's not all rubber)? Do you know what else is made of polyurethane: - a large part of the interior of premium vehicles - cold foam mattresses - all dish sponges - many food storage containers and drinking bottle components - all artificial leather fabrics (artificial leather IS polyurethane) - insulation in refrigerators, freezers, air conditioning units, etc. - as a sealant for furniture (veneer or foil) - electronic devices (smartphones, tablets, TVs, etc.) -....

I PERSONALLY would not worry about polyurethane sticking to my living room wall. Be more cautious when sniffing the glue during processing (it will probably also be a PU glue )

Thank you for the quick and detailed (reassuring) response.

Being cytopathologically preconditioned, it can't hurt to be cautious.

Fortunately, the panels are screwed on.

Oh.... there are such beautiful natural stone products for the wall that you can easily install yourself. The tactile feel is right, too. I would refrain from using plastic as a wall covering that is supposed to imitate something. It also somewhat reminds me of the 70s.

I defy the risk of annoying you with the question again, but just to be safe, I’m asking once more.

As long as I live, nothing will decompose.

However, this is not – as discussed several pages earlier – about replacing a tile backsplash, but about a total area of approx. 38 sqm. Are these dimensions also harmless?
