Hello,

can someone help me understand how DIN18065 should be interpreted regarding the handrail.
We have a two-flight staircase with opposite runs and a landing.
The handrail is on the right side of the first part of the staircase, after the landing the handrail changes to the left side. Is this permissible according to DIN?

Many thanks in advance

The railing belongs where the open side of the staircase is. That's what the DIN says, right? Is that the case with you or not? The side itself doesn't matter at all...

We have no "open side." Walls are built. It is not about a staircase railing, but only about the handrail. In other words: I walk up the stairs with a heavy bag in my hand and hold on to the handrail; after the landing, the handrail switches to the other side, meaning I have to switch the bag from one hand to the other in order to hold on to the handrail again.

Oh, I see! For a closed staircase the handrail should always be on the right side (viewed from above). The reason is probably that when going down, one can hold on better since the majority of the population is right-handed. I do not know of any strict regulation (must).
