We commissioned an expert from our main contractor for a terrace access with a flat aluminum threshold (barrier-free). He installed Styrodur insulation and sealed the area extensively. The sealing compound became so hard that it turned out to be very durable. Directly in front of it was a drainage channel, then it was backfilled. On the sealing, I then placed individual points and laid the substructure of the terrace. Directly next to the channel again, so that the load is not too great.

How to proceed if soft insulation is applied to the sealing should be something a professional (from the house construction company) can advise on. The landscape gardener may not have the expertise in this area.

In the pictures it looks like you still have 10 cm, which should be enough to cover with mortar and terrace slabs. The insulation is not hanging in the air, and XPS (it looks like) can easily support that.

On the terrace, the general contractor has installed windowsills in the doors and insulation below them. It is wheelchair accessible. At the front door, the insulation was not glued; we are to cut out as much as we need for the paving and seal the area again with bitumen coating.

Hi,

sheet metal boxes for sealing were installed on our terrace doors. See picture.

Today, the drainage channels are located in these boxes in the gravel bed.

No such sheet metal box is installed on our front door (Hm.. Why not, actually?) The entrance porch is covered with large granite slabs, the last 10 cm at the front door are not resting on the insulation but are floating.

Best regards,

Andreas

Ok, maybe with the photos of the terrace I unconsciously steered the topic in the wrong direction. Let's leave the terrace aside, the main entrance door looks the same. Yes, there are 10 cm between the insulation and the door trim. That would be enough for a gravel bed and paving, but the base insulation is actually hanging in the air, the base insulation doesn’t go all the way to the ground, and the insulation can never hold anything there if I can already press it in with my thumb... so I honestly can’t imagine how to solve that, except cutting out the base insulation completely in that area.

I wouldn’t overestimate pressing in with the thumb; you can also do that with the insulation under the floor slab, and the whole house rests on that. The insulation will also be backfilled and compacted underneath, preferably with concrete. You can simply pave over it. Unless something is seriously wrong with your setup that can’t be assessed from the pictures, that’s not a problem. The sealing must of course fit; that is much more important.
