Hello,

we are currently building a semi-detached house, and a completely normal classic doorbell is being installed.

We would like to later replace this with a smart video doorbell.

Which smart video doorbell can you recommend to us? It should consider the following points:

No cloud, all data should stay in my network.
The doorbell sound should continue to ring like the old normal doorbell and additionally ring on my phone and my wife's (it is enough if we are in the WLAN, it does not have to ring when we are on the go).
The door should continue to ring when there is currently no WLAN.
No monthly costs.

What does the legal situation look like? We will probably not be able to prevent that the street is filmed in the background. Is that bad or forbidden?
It is only filmed temporarily when someone has rung.

Filming is not the problem, but recording is.

We decided on a Doorbird. Yes, there is also a cloud subscription, but you don't have to use it. However, I suspect that some central entity still routes the data there, but I haven't checked this yet. Correspondingly, there is a video indoor station and/or a normal chime.

From my point of view, the only important thing now is that you have already installed the appropriate cables, i.e. to the doorbell position and to the later chime.

which cables need to be available?

I wanted a doorbell that can be installed on the conventional cables
or have special cables laid (probably at a high additional cost)

Which cables would be needed?

Get advice from the electrician and the door installer, otherwise you’ll end up like me:

In any case, pull network cables to the door/bell. That gives you flexibility regarding 2-wire or IP systems.
Also, do not install the bell too low. The cameras should be positioned at face height. (alternatively, lay an additional network cable for another camera)
Also, start thinking now about which lock you want to install (automatic lock/motor lock) and how you want to open the door (fingerprint, PIN, active/passive chip, key).

DoorBird ALWAYS needs the cloud or an internet connection; without it, the device simply doesn't work. Other systems need the cloud or other online services only for mobile ringing. In the home network, you can have most IP door intercoms called simply via SIP.

In all systems that I would consider somewhat serious, local ringing and mobile notification have nothing to do with each other, i.e., there is somewhere a relay that activates the doorbell in the hallway.

For wiring, you generally lay a duplex line; that gives you flexibility. Maybe someday a fingerprint reader will be installed?

Apart from that, mobile ringing outside the WLAN is not possible without a cloud or online service (whether DoorBird, 2N, Gira, or something else) in any reasonably comfortable form. Something has to establish the connection between you and your network or the doorbell. Either you are permanently connected to your home via VPN, or you let some servers handle the remote calling.

What do you think of the doorbells like Ring from Amazon or eufy from Anker?
