Does it make sense here to withdraw the application to reduce costs?

What is being reduced how? The general contractor certainly does not only build urban villas, so this is just a mental issue. And why artificially create another delay? The original poster is already paying the bank heavily, and that hurts.

For the second time because the first general contractor (not a developer, sorry) was a prefabricated house company which wanted the house to be €25,000 more expensive without any apparent reason after submitting the building application—where there were plenty of mistakes and it felt like they were doing it for the first time—and we felt we were being tricked. We then got out of the contract with the help of a lawyer, including a five-figure penalty payment, and looked for a new general contractor. This time it was massive and yes, again only problems.

An enlargement of the ground floor is not possible because we are already using the full building envelope, building envelope 10x10 and planned house 10.20x10.16.

We want the city villa because we do not want sloping ceilings on the upper floor; we live in an attic apartment and both grew up in attics and did not want that anymore, especially because of the roof windows. Moreover, the house is now perfectly planned for us and we have to undo everything again because the slopes ruin the rooms. In my opinion, a gable roof is not possible over our rooms. I will post our floor plan; maybe you have a different opinion.

If only the gable roof is our solution, then the ridge direction must be from east to west, as the surrounding houses have the same orientation.

The possibility to store something in the "attic" is absolutely necessary for us. Roof windows are a horror for us but I think they will hardly be avoidable.

Many thanks already for the many responses

Talk to the building authority about whether a knee wall of 1.80m or even 2m would be acceptable. If yes, put a shallow gable roof on it so that it fits better with the rest. You’ll have to put up with the small slope above your head – check the shower again to see if it can stay.

btw. Isn't the path with the shopping bags through the then busy chill-out area all the way to the kitchen a bit long for you? It wouldn’t be for me.

That is now excluded on this property.

Yes it is. Install one large dormer each facing north and south (I would prefer 3 small ones, but they would have more sloped ceilings). The bathroom would then need to be shifted a bit.

With a 10m wide house, a steep gable roof, and knee walls, there remains a decent attic space, at least more than with the city villa with a hip roof.
