Good morning,

we are builders and will start our new construction in November.

For the bathroom, we are planning a walk-in tiled shower. However, we have often read that tiled showers are supposed to be "unsafe" because leaks can be very difficult or detected late.

There are also shower trays that are flush with the floor. So not the ones that protrude a few centimeters, but instead of tiles, this shower tray is installed.

However, I couldn't find any information on this. Who can give us tips here?

Best regards
Hannah

Hello Hannah, that is nonsense... and only applies where neither the architect nor the site manager or the executing craftsmen have any idea! I have been planning and building such shower trays for almost 20 years... and it always amazes me how many simple mistakes are made when reading forums... or hearing around on the construction site. So... technically and structurally no problem at all... whether your building partners are good enough, you have to find out. The only important thing is that you choose the appropriate tiles (slip resistance class), which are abundantly offered by the trade... also matching the rest of the floor tiles in the bathroom. In addition, for many years there have been companies offering prefabricated, tileable shower trays! This makes the installation even a little easier... so don’t give up right away, it can be done!

Hello,

we also have such a shower in our new build (moved in three weeks ago). Initially, we had the same concerns as you, but then we played it safe. We had a tileable element from Wedi installed, which was then completely sealed with special material including in the corners these sealing tapes (not the one from Knauf from the hardware store, we tested that once in one spot, let it dry and lo and behold, you could simply peel it off again). We then tiled the floor with marble mosaic and now comes what some like to forget........... do not grout with normal grout filler as it washes out over time but with special grout for such showers. We used 2-component epoxy resin, it hardens like stone, is super tight and is a great contrast to the other grout. Finally, we sealed the entire floor of the shower 3 times with natural stone sealer, always applying crosswise. Result: the water beads perfectly and runs off wonderfully. No lime residues (and we have very hard water).

Hello,

I have to ask what all the stuff was called. I think it was all from Ardex but I will ask again. The tilers we had said bomb-proof would be, instead of the part that can be tiled, an epoxy screed with a slope and then built up as above. Where are you from???

Regards

For the shower and bath, I would only use tiles. I would also recommend good towels & terry cloth right away.
