Hello,

we are planning the garden for our new build and have now reached the topic of the lawn.

We want to edge the lawn with mowing stones (approx. 24cm wide) and later have the lawn regularly mowed by the robotic mower.

What would you do, lay sod or sow the lawn yourself? We have about 150 sqm of lawn area.

Which grass type would be suitable for us?
The lawn should be low-maintenance and robust (should not dry out immediately in summer and not drown in heavy rain).
Most of the lawn is in the sun and there is little shade on the lawn area (south-west facing).

It should also be possible to walk and run on the lawn (when children play or with the dog).

House handover scheduled before February/March 2023.

I hope you can help me (I unfortunately have little knowledge about this).

These are different topics mixed together. Whether the lawn drowns in rain mainly depends on your soil. Poorly permeable soil can be made more permeable by tilling in sand.

The other question is what kind of lawn you want. I see a bit of a wishlist but not a clear direction. On one hand, there is talk of a robotic mower, on the other hand about children and dogs. Do you want a golf course look or more something with daisies and co? Pure lawn is very maintenance-intensive and also needs a lot of water in summer. Daily cuts with the robotic mower promote strong growth and rather exacerbate the problem. Flower lawns don’t need that, and instead of a robot, you mow every 3 weeks on a high setting. Lack of water works in your favor here as everything grows more slowly.

we had already thought that we want a lawn mower robot that takes the work of mowing off our hands.

I can’t say anything definite about the soil yet, the topsoil was put aside for the construction phase, and on the hill with the topsoil, everything is already growing actively.

a nice green juicy lawn would be enough for us that does not burn quickly and turn brown in the summer. (could be in the direction of a golf course)
on the other hand, the lawn mower robot should mow every few days.
the lawn should also be able to withstand playing by dogs and children

if all this even works together at all

what do you think about the special grass for lawn mower robots?

Turf or sowing ... opinions differ, there are pros and cons. Turf has its advantage in labor effort and it can be used faster (by children). Sown lawn is more labor-intensive, as more steps need to be completed. It is definitely cheaper (if you participate yourself), but you also have to protect the area longer and keep it free of children.

Ultimately, I see the price disadvantage of turf as negligible for 150sqm. The sqm costs around €2.50 online.

I honestly think robotic mowers for that size are nonsense, it takes 10 minutes to mow the towel by hand and you also need a proper mower in addition to the robot, e.g. for the start of the season (or you can borrow one somewhere). You also have to consider whether you want mulched grass lying around or prefer to have it collected by the mower.

Currently we have no children but at least 1 is planned :)

Since there is also enough to do inside in the [Neubau], it is no problem to give the lawn the time it needs

friends of mine have a Worx robotic lawn mower for a lawn of about 100sqm
they are satisfied with the lawn mowing itself.

They have high L-shaped stones on the lawn edge so they have to rework the edges every few months with an edge trimmer.

For the first cut in spring, they also use the robotic mower (it is supposed to handle that without any problems)

Believe me, for the small area that is not work. My property is over 1000sqm, that is work :D
