Road closure for crane parking in a dead-end street?

Yes and no. Of course you are right. BUT: You also have to consider that you might wake sleeping dogs under certain circumstances. If now asks the municipality and a shady official then explains that this street may never be blocked, not even briefly, then you have a mess. Because my plan B would be to order a crane (possibly a loading crane would suffice) for one or two weeks in the case of timber frame construction. Under poor conditions, this could even be one of the most economical alternatives. Only this crane _actually_ isn’t allowed to block the street either. And if the shady official finds out about it, I’d be in big trouble.

So if you can already be fairly certain that a weeks-long closure won’t work, then have a friendly chat with the neighbors and come by with a crate of beer (etc.) to thank them for their patience when the street is not passable during the day, and don’t even activate the municipality. That would at least be my strategy.

That is certainly a useful strategy in some situations, but maybe really not if there are no accessible alternative escape routes. Just my two cents, but for us that is not an option.

Yes. I understand. But I am "from the field" on both sides in this regard. A mobile crane can be dismantled in max. 10 minutes. In the case of a kitchen or room fire, that could be problematic. In all other incidents, from heart attack, stroke, to attic fire or slipped disc, it does not noticeably negatively affect a situation. Now the chance of a room or kitchen fire during the day is very limited (in the entire catchment area of the city of Stuttgart in 2019, there were only 30 such operations). Calculated down to an average-sized community... Anywho. Basically, you're right. But in most cases, it doesn’t (technically – not legally!!) matter. My bold claim is based on the assumption that the dead end is no longer than about 300 m.

We had that too. Whether a dead end or not doesn't matter. Side street with a bus stop 20 m away. We had to apply for a half-sided road closure for 3 days.
