Hello everyone,

we were finally able to start today in our half-timbered house from 1890. First, we removed the old wooden slats from the walls and uncovered the following.

Now we are asking ourselves how best to reclad this cost-effectively? Ideally, we would like to clad the walls with drywall, but I heard that you shouldn’t do this with a half-timbered house (risk of mold).

From the outside, the house is not exposed but covered with fiber cement panels, so the half-timbering is not directly exposed to rainwater.

It would be nice if you had some tips for us.

Best regards,

Dirk

Unfortunately, I have nothing to contribute on the topic, but is the roof really as "wavy" as it appears in the photo?

Should the facade remain?

What is the financial framework? What exactly should be done?
From plastering, through clay plaster, to drywall, wood fiber internal insulation, and wall heating, everything is still possible.

If you already have the walls open, I would first have it checked whether the wood is still okay everywhere. A huge project both financially and in terms of time investment. Done properly, tearing down and rebuilding is probably cheaper. But I think it's great when such houses are preserved.

Puuuhhhhh, I always admire people who dare to tackle something like this. However, your post including the question (+cost-effective) now leaves me somewhat puzzled. Has someone from the field looked at it?

Before starting here, a substance assessment should urgently be carried out, otherwise you could potentially burn a lot, a lot of money.
