Remove small indentations and grooves before the large surface. Preferably with a small round brush. Then roll over the surface. This prevents bulging edges due to double paint application. Also paint the edges all around first, then the door panels. I always have a square brush as well as a round one – sometimes one works better than the other. For the surfaces, of course, use a foam roller, and always paint in the direction of the grain. Up and down, gently smooth out, meaning: lift the roller while rolling, do not set it down. But you notice it when you make a wrong move there. I always use paint stripper for cleaning and primer as undercoat. I would advise a beginner as opposed to only to use acrylic paint, because it is easier to work with, usually dry after 4 hours, and you can paint over it. Everything can be cleaned with water.

Regards, Yvonne

About the paints: It is a matter of opinion whether acrylic or PU or alkyd. My experience: acrylic dries too fast, the orange peel effect does not disappear after rolling. My brother, a master painter by profession, paints everything with a wide brush, he manages to get it smooth even with acrylic - I do not. Primer: You can do it. Then you only need to paint once, because the primer already creates the color white. However, it is no longer absolutely necessary. Because the paint grips into the pores of the sanded surface. It adheres. The second coat of paint, at least with solvent-based paint, will slightly dissolve the first layer and merge with it, also adhering. Otherwise, not all, but many roads lead to Rome....

How would you proceed if the door is painted? We have a door in the house that could theoretically still be saved, but it has been painted over many times. Maybe someone knows an "easy" solution to remove this paint?

Stripping paint

With a door, one can also consider covering it with a patterned wallpaper. Or upholstering it with fabric. Or letting the children decorate it. Or or or...

Best regards in brief

Decorating by the children might really be something... I will think about that! Unfortunately, the door also has an unprofessionally installed glass section. I would also have to see how to undo that (it is a bedroom then).

Strip staining: You lay the door outside on two trestles in the sun, apply the stain generously, very generously!, cover the wet stain with Frappan foil, let it sit in the sun for a good three quarters of an hour, then remove the Frappan, and bam, the old paint comes off with a spatula. Remove residues with water. It is effective but a messy business.
