A paint roller is a disposable item, available at any Bauhaus. Someone in your circle of acquaintances should probably own an orbital sander, after all, Black and Decker offers one for 49.90.
We once had mahogany doors, real veneer, plus dark brown metal frames. The doors were too good to throw away. The frames were too dark. So we did it the same way. Going from dark brown to white required three coats. We used high gloss, and yet it didn't fail—and it's fun. Really, making something nice is fun.

I don't see any need for new doors at all, only for new door handle sets. For purely cosmetic renovations, there are these door makeovers like Meister Portas & Co. nowadays so many things are foiled that aren't "right around the corner," even brand new windows.

I've never heard of that before, but I gladly add it to my list of good tips you always get here.

There is so much you wouldn't believe...

I estimate that replacing all the doors upstairs will cost us a good 1000 euros for new material + installation + disposal of the old doors + labor to first get the old material out. If you can get that done much cheaper by a "door makeover artist," that is of course a sensible option...

Why not try starting with just a door frame?

Last week, I also first only bought a new door leaf, hung it up at home, found it good, and the next day got the rest of the doors.

I've never heard of that before, but I gratefully add it to my list of good tips that one always gets here.

I heard of Meister Portas already as a child, so about forty years ago. Back then, the company converted old doors with panel fillings into the now commonly used smooth-surface doors (and advertised getting the "new" door back within a few days - picked up and installed, of course). They still exist, and competitors surely do too. Just Google door renovation.

I just googled experiences with Meister Portas and requested the info package for door renovation on their homepage. At first glance, however, I don't think it's worth it. Apparently, you can expect to pay around €150 or more per door leaf and per renovation.

"Problem": We probably miscalculated the costs for interior doors, at least if we want to order them locally in stores and not online. The dimensions are unspectacular, 3 times 198.5x86 and 2 times 198.5x73, so probably standard.

Also very possible quickly, I often wonder myself with things I do not know exactly.

The current doors are 22 years old, quite well preserved except for the lever handles, but in this orange-tinted tone, which we do not like visually at all. The current laminate floor (also brownish-orange) matches the doors, but probably no longer fits our idea of a new floor.

Depending on the execution, the doors can be "done for" or last that long again.

The owner once suggested to us as an idea to maybe only replace the door leaves, but then the frames would no longer match the doors in color? We want white door leaves or ones in a light wood look.

So a rental apartment, I can understand if you want to "save".

In any case, based on some online research, we thought that for about 120 euros you can definitely get good door leaves, if you can get at least appealing door leaves for 70 euros online at first glance?

"Online" without precise knowledge of the subject can backfire

In a specialist store locally we almost had a heart attack, because even the simplest white doors including frame and handle were hardly available for under 500 euros.

A price for a standard door around 500 € is quite realistic. The "heart attack" probably comes from the online research.

Or did we just look in an excessively expensive store?
I don't think so.

We cannot replace frames ourselves. We have a trained carpenter among acquaintances who also once agreed to help us with that. We first thought that changing 5 frames and door leaves + handles would be a matter of 2 hours? Probably miscalculated again?

Oh yes, totally wrong, in an old building these 2 hours for ONE door can quickly be required.

If we were to have the doors completely installed by a professional, what roughly can one estimate from your experience for 5 doors?

At least 85 € per door. Plus VAT.

We actually did not want to order online; because we thought: afterwards it might not fit after all, complaints then possibly much more difficult than on site, sometimes extremely high shipping costs, etc. But since these are actually standard dimensions, we have now become uncertain because of the prices locally and our miscalculation whether we should not order doors, frames etc. online after all?
