If they did not receive the contract for the Evaluation [Sanierung], they will have nothing to say. I wouldn’t either, it’s a lucrative contract that would be missed.

With so many measures, I would also have everything professionally assessed, also with regard to inheritance / purchase of the house.

Not that in the end demolition and new construction turn out to be cheaper. Especially with asbestos, it really raises my hackles.

I wouldn't approach this too naively either. It reads as if nothing can be used except for the basic substance, plus expensive dismantling and disposal costs. I would simply start by roughly calculating with at least 70% of the new construction costs per m². Depending on where you build and how high your standards are, about 1.1-1.4k/m².

No, it can be done by oneself.

It is not as highly dangerous as many write here, and if you follow all safety precautions and buy a good respirator, nothing will happen.

That is not enough.

Asbestos breaks down through mechanical stress (such as during dismantling) into nanoparticles, which can even become small enough to penetrate the skin. And inside the body, this stuff is firstly really nasty and secondly no longer removable.

The problem is not simply the creation of dust during work, but that it settles in the work environment (aka home) and should be removed. Otherwise, you will blow dust residues into the air and thus potentially into the respiratory tract every time you later dust dry.

What one may do and what one should smartly do do not have to be congruent.

The real danger from asbestos was not its presence in the building. But the German fear that led to the tearing apart of the buildings. Not even ten horses could get me there.

Good evening

Thank you very much for your answers.

Yes, that has already helped me a lot.

The order was the valuation because of the inheritance. The "condition" of the house only became visible after removing the wooden ceilings and wallpapers. Before, everything looked fine, which is why the compulsory heirs also think my mother inherited a dream house..

The two experts expressed to us regarding the possible renovation that it would definitely be feasible and also cheaper than a new build.

They also both agreed that, for example, the window replacement would not have to be done immediately, but at the moment we find it more reasonable that if the facade is going to be insulated anyway and the roof redone, then the windows should be renewed at the same time.

I am fully aware of how dangerous asbestos is in the body, precisely for that reason I am skeptical whether one could really dismantle and dispose of it oneself. There are companies for a reason. As far as I know, the renovation because of asbestos would be tax-deductible, then at least a part of the costs would come back to us (even if that won’t be a large part).

I think the most sensible thing will be to wait for the report, which should be ready in 2-4 weeks, and then have cost estimates made by companies. If these show that it is not worthwhile for us or that it is worthwhile, we can still deal more concretely with the topic of homeownership.

I would just feel sorry for the house, so many memories are attached to it...
