Topping-out ceremony and regular catering are two different things. The former we organized with the general contractor. Posting at the site, saying there is a topping-out ceremony, Karsten is treating, who wants to come along, then plan, because we want it to be cozy, we will close up the house by then. With windows, the client provides festival tent sets and gas heaters, we, the company Richtkranz and Gasbuddel. Food and drink by the client, music, for that we provide our Makitas. That's the arrangement, and about 15 journeymen plus boss plus secretary were there. Together with our private guests it turned into a roaring party, our house was sealed, warm, and cozy. Regular catering were the aforementioned crates of drinks, which I always kept on hand, Flens free, Flens Radler, Vilsa. And then at 7:30 am a walk to the construction site, WhatsApp to my wife, there are three men there, she then brings them coffee and cake. One should know, my wife only works three times a week, other days she has time for such things. Karsten

So, it's primarily about the accommodation. You should check whether the craftsmen go home every evening or take up a room nearby. At home, they will find a refrigerator and bring their preferred bread or sandwich. It's different with a room on site: they have to rely on expensive bakeries and/or eat out in the evenings. This is not necessarily subsidized by the boss for craftsmen. Therefore, they will certainly appreciate a crate of drinks (sparkling water, cola) and potato salad or pea soup. I would ask about this in advance so you can prepare accordingly. Stinginess or remarks ("they should work, not eat") I would simply refrain from out of courtesy, respect, and good cooperation. That's where, in my opinion, the wheat is separated from the chaff [emoji6]

Ps smaller crews, like the electrician or tiler, always appreciate a cake or coffee

I see it the same way: as one calls into the forest, so my house is built

And precisely because catering for an unpredictable number of hungry people is not an easy task, the makeshift solution “Leberkässemmel” is so popular.

May I ask what “Baunebenkosten” added up to in total?

A crate of Flens costs between 10 and 13,- It lasted almost a week. The water comes at 5 per crate also per week. Let it be 25 per week, about 500,- euros. Topping-out ceremony also 500,- Small tips 500,- Would give 1500,- additional costs. For that a smooth construction. What do others pay for their surveyors and overseers?

So in the first week of the house installation, we always brought coffee and something sweet in the afternoons. It was very well received. That also allowed for a bit of chatting with the craftsmen. And a crate with Spezi/Limo/Apfelschorle was always there as well.

Otherwise, I do see it that the workers basically have to take care of themselves.

(We didn't have a topping out ceremony, as neither we nor the workers were interested in it.)

How did you actually manage to provide for the craftsmen in terms of time? When I finished work as early as possible at 3:30 pm in the afternoon and then arrived at the construction site around 4 pm, usually no one was there anymore. During the lunch break, I could exceptionally extend the break, but just the travel time took up an hour. With a half-hour lunch break, I could only do this for necessary meetings on the construction site.
