But there has also not been a pandemic until now.

Me too!!

But at the moment it is simply not possible and alternative celebrations at a later date are the only option.

The carpenters were not there for the topping-out ceremony, they didn’t feel like it. But the bricklayers were around for a while, ate something with us and didn’t get any bills but each received a Lindhase with a brick (model building!) around their neck. I didn’t get the impression that they expected more. Maybe it’s different in the countryside.

Current situation: well, of course, cancel it. Craftsmen lunch basket sounds good.

I'll chime in here :)

Next Wednesday our topping-out ceremony could take place and we're somehow torn back and forth.

The plot is, as is known, not big, so we have exactly 0.00 space to do anything there. We would have to move the ceremony after the topping-out speech.. Also, the planned time is totally inappropriate.. Wednesday 2 pm. We ourselves are working then (I am currently in the middle of training after a department change) and also all kinds of guests won't be there at that time.

Our site manager said that the workers basically only do it if the builders want it, but they themselves don't really need it.

My husband now suggested canceling the topping-out ceremony itself on the construction site and instead inviting people over for a barbecue at our place on the weekend.

How do you handle it / how have you done it?!

I think that we will rather not have a topping-out ceremony, but invite all friends when the house is finished and have a barbecue party in the garden. We will probably also invite the workers and the employees of the construction company.

For various reasons, we also were unable to properly "plan" the topping-out ceremony, so it could not take place in the "traditional" form. Nevertheless, we took the very short-notice opportunity to invite relatives, friends, and neighbors to casually drop by the construction site from 5 p.m. on the said day.... There was no topping-out speech, no wreath..., but rather a small address from us in which we could express our thanks to the workers, etc. Along with that, a small buffet, a few standing tables, plenty of drinks and snacks... right in the middle of the street :) Of course, this is not always possible everywhere, but in our case, it was a successful "street party" where interested people could stroll through the house and get to know half of the neighborhood more closely in a direct and relaxed atmosphere. I can actually only recommend it, as it is definitely better than doing "nothing" at all. It also frees you from the thought of having to organize a barbecue or similar event later on. You can always still do that later, then certainly in a more "casual" atmosphere with already familiar neighbors, etc.
