They are naive souls who feel appreciated by such things.

For our topping-out ceremony, there were sausages etc. for those who were there. Otherwise, nothing, you don’t really know exactly when anyone will come anyway. If you don’t finish work early, you won’t see anyone anyway. Bringing something by during the lunch break is very difficult when both are working anyway; just the travel time of 60 minutes round trip takes up half the lunch break. If you’re not building with a general contractor and maybe live right next door, you can handle it differently; for us, that was not possible at all.

Drinks were always available, including beer. From demolition to moving in, a total of 3 bottles of beer were consumed. On cold days, I usually brought a pot of coffee; on Wednesdays, a sales truck from the butcher was parked opposite, where they could get something, and now and then I had something delivered. Popular were currywurst, chicken, and spit roast.

There was absolutely nothing during the construction with us, we were only there a few times with the surveyor anyway. We skipped a topping-out ceremony because we were on vacation - feedback from the site manager: that suits you just fine, everyone can get home on time. When we were free of defects sometime after moving in, we invited the foreman for a barbecue. It was a nice evening.

Coffee machine and other drinks were always available with us. I offered food when I was present anyway. I also always offered something to craftsmen when I used their services. Because small side issues are dealt with that way, instead of having to come back. Conversations take place and there may be tips from the treasure chest of experience.

Besides, it’s a joy and I don’t lose any honor. They are not lemmings but people who appreciate attentions.

Of course, it is not mandatory.

I often brought coffee from the gas station and had lunch once with each trade (there is a butcher with a lunch menu around the corner). In Dec. there was mulled wine and bratwurst on the last working day

For the topping-out ceremony, we had a catering service with hot and cold dishes as well as employees for the service. Everyone stayed for a long time there as well
