But yes, extremely interesting for all young or expectant parents. That’s exactly the perspective that is often missing before birth.

By the way, that is an important qualification. For couples who earn roughly the same, the loss is much greater if one income disappears. Unfortunately, the legislator has not really recognized this yet.

Well – there is a legal entitlement, and from everything I hear from this region, you can get a spot if you really want one. Even without lawsuits. However, the municipality certainly knows how to resist this: Anyone who even once mentions the word “legal entitlement” as an applicant for a daycare place suddenly gets a spot very quickly, but always at the other end of the city; or in very large cities there are court rulings of “max. 30 minutes by public transport,” which, however, often takes just as long by car in big cities. And of course, no one wants/can drive that far. And these offered daycares also happen to not be on the way to the workplace (since this is also asked for on the form). This way, the city quickly gets rid of these annoying entitlement seekers. Maybe one in five actually makes use of it. And if you have once rejected such an offered place, then you are not allowed to claim a renewed legal entitlement for two more years.

This is the absolute crux, and I am always amazed in the forum at what kinds of assumptions financial planning is approached with. Thanks for stating that! 700 €/month is by no means the end of the line. In NRW that might be upper middle class. Take Marl in the northern Ruhr area. There the municipal daycare spot costs a proud 1,036 €/month if both parents earn on average more than 3,250 € net. That’s easily 15% of net income going to daycare. For one child!

That's exactly how we proceeded. We had all eventualities calculated, such as only one salary, long parental leave, children, etc. In the end, we bought a really nice condominium with numerous gimmicks and now we laugh ourselves silly over the 800 euros monthly burden.

For which daycare? The statute says in Marl for U2 and 35 hours only 607€ or 45 hours 809€ with an income of 125,000€ and more (highest level). 410/546€ for 45 hours and over 2 years. In addition, the last two years in the daycare are completely free.
So don't paint it quite so black.

I am referring to 45 hours for U2. There it says in the "fee table for daycare centers" at the bottom right €990.50, plus €46 for catering. But basically, that is not that important: even the €809 you mentioned (I can’t find this number in the PDF document; except in Recklinghausen – maybe you slipped into their ordinance?) is far, far above what is regularly mentioned here in financing threads. People always casually write "€200 for daycare." That doesn’t exist anywhere around here if you have a salary with which you can afford a house. Except in Monheim, but that is a well-known special case.

Well, I don't have children just to hand them off for 45 hours a week after six months. So personally, I would always only take the costs from Ü2. In the beginning, there is parental allowance. And later only the pure [Kita] costs. Food is costs anyway. And then you're in for two years, because rarely do you have to pay longer. In this respect, I would only fixate on the costs if it is so tight that you basically have to give the child away again after birth because work and salary are too important.

Most men who “have” children return to working 40 hours a week very quickly after the birth and consequently do indeed leave their “had” children in the care of other people for a good 45 hours. Very commendable that you handle it differently and take your share of the care work. Not many do.
