Dear AoR, dear experts,

I’m joining in here. Yesterday I had the first meeting with the potential builder, who also recommended an air-to-water heat pump with ST. I mentioned the low annual coefficient of performance to him, but he said that so far, his experience with his clients has been good. He roughly estimated I would have to expect electricity costs of around 60 euros a month (for the pump). He advised me against the planned brine-to-water heat pump because the initial investment is too expensive (your keyword "amortization"). I would like to be independent of gas; on the other hand, everything has to remain affordable, of course. He built a KfW70 house for a friend; this friend wanted to install a fireplace later, and the chimney had already been built during construction. Since the house is so well insulated, he still hasn’t installed the fireplace.

Next week I am going to see an independent energy consultant, let’s see what advice he gives me. I was also in a hurry to go to the Verbraucherzentrale, but when you get unsettled there  - maybe better not after all.

The idea of being independent from gas may be appealing, but does it really benefit you? Ultimately, you do become independent from one energy source, but a heat pump also doesn't work without electricity, and a wood stove stays cold if you don't put wood in it.

But aside from that, you should have something like a concept before you ultimately decide on an energy source. Even though it is a frequently used argument that air-water heat pumps have a low annual performance factor (which partly cannot be denied), you can still heat quite efficiently with them if the downstream components are adapted accordingly, such as a radiant heating system with low flow temperature, etc., the building envelope is properly insulated, and the device itself is properly sized.

Of course, there is always something that is even more efficient and causes even lower consumption costs, but whether that is in a healthy balance with the acquisition costs, maintenance intensity, or simply your own convenience, everyone must decide for themselves.

What is it really like with air-to-water heat pumps? You often read that below 0 degrees, practically only the electric rod heats the buffer tank and the pump no longer supplies anything?

I live in the northwest, it hasn't been very cold for a long time, especially not continuously.

We have also often asked ourselves this question and have learned that for an effective cost-benefit calculation of a heating system, it definitely must first be clarified what heating load (I think that's what it's called) a house has. That is why we have moved away from worrying about heating systems and are now waiting until we have more details about our house. Then we will go to 1-2 heating installers with the data and have everything calculated and offered to us. At the moment, we are still in the floor plan planning stage.

You are certainly right; but you have to inform yourself beforehand... and I am very grateful to the experts here for the useful advice. Today I spoke with an acquaintance who is also a construction contractor, and he said that too much is not worthwhile, minimal effort to meet legal requirements and proper insulation. Otherwise, many things do not pay off. So I am already saying goodbye to [Sole-Wasserpumpe] and [Photovoltaik]. In the end, it probably comes down to a gas boiler with [ST] for domestic hot water. At most, a water-guided fireplace, since I want a fire pit anyway, it just depends on the additional costs.
