I would say "so-so". After all, you may only build on a maximum of 35 percent, so roughly 65% remain for (front) garden. Here it is 40% (which is more than sufficient).our development plan is pretty "loose"

We built as large as possible (no development plan, but restrictive building laws in Bavaria that unfortunately make densification rather unattractive). The dimensions are 12.5m x 7.3m. The garden will still be around 70sqm; lacking a green thumb, that is enough for us. Apart from a grill with a seating area, a paddling pool, and a sandbox, we don't need anything else. But of course, that is very individual. We are building without a basement, so we definitely need the space in the house.

how big it is then also always a budget question
Just build as big as your needs are. That's what everyone does if they can and are allowed to. Why should you build more? Or don't you have to watch the costs?
Maybe they didn't think enough beforehand, but just chose a standard floor plan? Presumably, you will never be 100% satisfied, but many "mistakes" can be avoided if you think things through thoroughly... And listen to the advice and tips from the forumeveryone tells you what they would do differently if you were to build again.
