Hello,

shortly we will clear the construction site where still a lot of stuff is standing around. Among other things, there are hundreds, maybe even thousands of brand new sand-lime bricks (2DF, L). Originally, I planned to build a carport next to the house, but given the available material, the idea of a solid garage for a passenger car, mid-size station wagon category (Passat, Insignia etc.) is growing. How big should I plan and what additional costs will I face? I would do the masonry work myself under the "guidance" of a bricklayer. Time is not a decisive factor, I see this as a leisure project... It should not become living space, so no heating or special insulation is planned. Only space for the car and a couple of tool cabinets, winter tires etc., one window and one gate. I am sure it is not as simple as I imagine, so I thank you for your experiences and advice.

Regards, Ruska

Sand-lime bricks in 2DF you would need quite a lot for a garage, even if it is a single garage, because it would probably be advisable to use them for walls one brick (24 cm) thick.

Assuming all the stuff is in front of the car, so nothing next to it, and you want to be able to open the front door on the driver's side and the rear door on the passenger side at the same time, I would probably not want to go below a shell construction width of 301 cm (= outside 349 cm).

Would the garage stand free, attached on one or both sides, on the boundary?
The typical garage DIY builder here in the forum is not a trained construction worker, but also not a hobby cook.

How should the roof be?

Wasn't there a post months ago where someone asked about a roofing option? The problem was, he had already built up to the top without thinking about the roof beforehand.

I was thinking of a free-standing one, next to the house.

As simple as possible, thought of a flat roof. But I haven't planned anything concrete yet.
First, I want to roughly outline whether it's even possible or if I should rather stick with the carport.
