Hello everyone,

I have installed a drywall partition in the basement. The wall is only meant to separate the storage room from the "hobby room."

The door opening can remain open, so that no fixed door needs to be installed.

I left the door opening with standard measurements, so that I can realize a door width of 760mm and a height of 1980mm. The entire wall is 100mm thick.

Since I actually do not want a fixed door and only want a passage frame without hinges, I was quite shocked at how expensive that is.

In fact, I cannot find this in any hardware store (at least I haven’t found anything). Online, the frames cost around €140 plus €60 shipping.

In other words: I won’t get under €200 – just for having a visually nice passage.

Does anyone have an idea for an alternative? I also considered simply filling everything in with plaster and also plastering over the drywall profile inside. Certainly not the finest solution, but possibly doable. The only problem is that the drywall sheets around the door opening are never cut perfectly...

Somehow I don’t see why I should spend €200 just for the frame.

I am open to any advice/tips! Thanks!

Take wood and build it yourself? In the end, it's just 9 boards mitered, glued together, and painted. It doesn't have to carry a heavy door.

PS:
Well, I can pick up a CPL white frame at the local Hornbach in 2 hours for 99 EUR. Where are you looking and for what??

If you really don’t need a door and only care about a clean finish, I would simply use neatly cut corner protection profiles and filler. Frame the edges with it, fill, sand, paint – done. It looks much tidier than exposed drywall edges, costs almost nothing, and is more than enough for a basement room.

If you want it to look a bit more elegant: MDF strips from the hardware store, cut at a miter, glued, painted. It looks like a simple frame without much effort. They are often available already white-foiled or raw for under €10 each. This way you’ll easily stay under €50 total.

What speaks against a normal door frame for 99€? We are only talking about a storage or hobby room in the basement. Maybe there is a cheaper option, but probably none that requires less labor time.

Yes, the working time should not be underestimated, especially since you also need to have the tools. A finished frame is installed in 30 minutes, in that time you haven't even planned the custom-built frame.

I would also just take a completely normal frame: 92 euros Komplettzarge P… CPL white (similar to RAL 9010) 198.5x73.5x9.0 cm left it fits wall thicknesses up to 11cm. do not screw in the hinges but simply put white plugs into the holes and that's it.
