We have solid parquet flooring in the upper floor starting from the hallway. The flooring installer did not leave expansion joints at the doors, so it was laid continuously (glued) and said that this has never caused problems before, even though it is not DIN-compliant. Acquaintances said their flooring installer advised against it. Should we have the joints cut afterwards?

Hello,

I would definitely recommend cutting the expansion joints afterwards. Even when laying laminate, you have to "build in" a 3cm gap to the walls and also to the doors. Because, as the name expansion joint suggests, wood works and expands and contracts. It doesn't have to lead to problems, but if your parquet ever warps and breaks, you'll have that nonsense. Your floor installer was simply too lazy to lay the joint properly. I wouldn't accept that. Just because "there have never been any problems." Stupid statement. He should do it properly, that's what he's paid for.

He said it would look better, which is true. But taking later damage into account does not justify it. However, I would be interested to know if anyone has had long-term experience with this type of installation.

How many meters are involved? What does the manufacturer's recommendation say? But if he has left space at the edge, it will work.

The hallway is 15 sqm (rectangular) and the three adjoining rooms are each about 17 sqm. About 1 cm of space has been left by the walls, that is the blue strip along the screed. (The bathroom is tiled).

Oh yes, he stuck some kind of fleece over the expansion joint. The purpose behind it? Can something like that stop the movements of the screed or how useful is that at all?
