Good day, a question about painting as a DIY job. I am considering painting my new building myself. So far, it is included in the total price.

I have worked for years as a holiday job in a painting company, painting apartments and smaller objects like cafés, so I am not afraid of the work and have experience. But that was always "repainting" existing coatings.

Painting a new building for the first time would therefore be new territory for me. Hence the question: is it doable with two people? How many days should one roughly plan for it? It concerns about 200 m2 of living space. Of course, it will be plastered and puttied by the builder.

And do you have to prime somehow, or do you apply the paint directly (probably 2-3 coats)?

Thanks in advance!

With 200 sqm of living space, I estimate about 500-600 sqm of wall area and 200 sqm of ceiling area.

With filling, fleece/Raufaser, and painting, I would estimate 300-400 hours. With two people, this is possible if you take 3 weeks off and go full throttle.

Especially in the living, kitchen, and bathroom areas, I would not skimp on filling... with spotlights, wall lamps, and mirrors with backlighting, grazing light quickly reveals the craftsmanship flaws.

What kind of plaster will be applied? Which work steps are not agreed upon (Q1-4)?
Do you want very smooth walls? Or is Raufaser also sufficient for you in case of doubt?
I would recommend wallpapering with [Malervlies] (have it done). The painting experience is then simply much better.

Otherwise, the general rule applies when plaster has the desired quality: priming, first coat, second coat. Sometimes a third coat is also needed.

I would estimate that two people can manage this in one week working 8 hours per day. After work and weekends accordingly longer.
I took much longer, but never painted everything at once, rather one room after another over several weeks.

How much are you saving by doing this?

I would think about it carefully if it is also a standard DIY task. The thing is, painting on raw plaster is completely different from repainting during renovation.

Thank you for your quick responses :)

The following has been agreed:

Plastering and filling work:
All interior wall surfaces of the brick masonry will receive a textured lime gypsum plaster. The walls in the wet rooms will receive a lime-cement plaster.
Edge protection strips on outside and reveal corners. Movement profiles at the movement joints.
Interior plaster surface Q2
The ceilings in the living area will be fully and securely filled.

Painting work:
The wall and ceiling surfaces will receive two coats of opaque dispersion paint in white.

--> We have subsequently agreed on silicate paint for an additional cost.

The general contractor says his Q2 plaster is more like Q3 and I believe him because I have seen finished houses from him and they look very good.

Hi anyway, with Q2-Q3 you usually have to sand and fill again. I’m generously doubling my effort estimate.
