May I ask how satisfied you are with the solar for hot water? Feel free to also send a PM if this deviates too much from the thread topic.

I am extremely satisfied with the solar/hot water system. Heating support wouldn't have made sense (whenever it delivers, you don't need it.) Therefore, only 5 sqm.

September 2022: 611 kWh total energy

66.3% 405 kWh energy needed for hot water: 59.1% 361 kWh generated by solar 7.2% 44 kWh generated by gas

28.2% 172 kWh energy needed for household etc. 172 kWh electricity from the grid

5.6% 34 kWh energy needed for heating: 34 kWh electricity for the low-temperature heat pump from the power grid

Conclusion: I saved 361 kWh of gas, which is €55 at the current gas rate. In one month! If someone asks me whether solar or photovoltaic, I would first recommend solar. It's a good thing and you only need two panels for 2-3 people, which is easily enough. Photovoltaic is not worthwhile for me because I would have to finance it (house financing is still ongoing) and I don't have two electric cars yet (let's see by 2040). Two photovoltaic panels do not deliver close to €55/month :)

Thanks! What did you pay?

We also want to install solar for hot water in 2023. In combination with a wood stove, possibly water-heated. Then we could almost entirely do without gas. In summer, solar thermal would heat the water and the rest of the time the stove and solar thermal together. That’s the plan anyway, but it all still needs to be carefully planned.

First of all, I don’t really understand your energy calculation. You are mixing electricity and thermal energy together in a confused way. What does the calculation look like for the entire year?

Besides that, I consider your setup, as it evolved, to be one of the worst variants. Much more could have been achieved with proper planning. 1. You built the classic (cheap) developer/general contractor variant with gas + solar 2. Then the big air conditioner was added

From the start, they should have relied on air conditioning as heating, domestic hot water heat pump or central instantaneous heater for hot water, and photovoltaics. That would have really been effective and significantly (!) cheaper both in operation and acquisition.

1. You build yourself the classic (cheap) developer/contractor variant with gas + solar -> Cheap? It's a decent Viessmann system with underfloor heating.

2. Then the hefty air conditioning comes along -> Yes, mainly because it got too hot in summer. Very unpleasant with a baby.

One should have relied on air conditioning as heating, a domestic hot water heat pump, or a central instantaneous water heater for hot water and photovoltaics from the start. -> I built in 2013. Back then I still had about 28-40€ gas costs/month, so manageable. Air-to-air systems were also not as efficient as nowadays.
