"Simply cutting out" is not an option there. It really takes practice to do it cleanly with a jigsaw, or you use a circular saw and clamp a guide. And the ventilation behind is then zero, it can and will start to mold back there.

Correct, we had the same situation with our bathroom cabinet. Super expensive and with a glossy lacquer finish. Even our cabinet maker refused to notch anything out there.

We doubled it up with corresponding side strips, looks good and will never be touched again.
