Hello everyone,

I have a problem.... I would like to install a swing for my children. The children's rooms are upstairs "under the roof." That means: half of the children's rooms have sloping ceilings, the other half have a flat ceiling. The bigger problem, however, is the drywall ceilings. The drywall ceiling is attached to a lathing (roof battens in counter-batten format). This counter-battening is fastened to the collar beams / clamps (I think that is the correct term).

I have roughly sketched the setup. The blue area is just a foil. I had only installed it so that the insulation wool between the collar beams does not fall down and lie on the drywall ceiling (or fall on the workers’ necks during installation).

My problem is: I don't know exactly where the beams are located. I have an opening in the drywall ceiling where the lamp hangs, but as you know, it is quite small. From there one could measure (the width of the beams is known). But this approach is, of course, not very pleasant.

I am not sure if there can even be a good answer for this in a forum, but has anyone ever faced the same problem?

So measuring from the lamp hole only makes sense if you want to use the beam to the left or right of it. But this would probably be the variant that works best initially. This way you can get an idea of where the beam is, and you can additionally "confirm" it by "knocking." Because it will sound different where the lath/beam is than in the hollow space.

An alternative to this variant, or if it is supposed to be in another place, I don't see the pure "knocking" of the beams as feasible. At least not something that would be non-destructive. In general, however, the beam position should be well determined by knocking, and depending on the width of the beams, there is also some leeway.

Thank you for the answer. Unfortunately, tapping probably doesn't help much at first, since there is a cavity (with the battens) between the drywall ceiling and the collar beam. But I just thought that I could check if I can see the screws in the drywall ceiling; depending on the orientation of the battens, they run along the collar beams (since one batten of the battens should lie on the collar beam).

That could also be an option, especially if magnetic screws were used. Then you could actually locate them with a magnet!

A slatted structure for panels is lightweight construction, you have to find the beams. Children also swing sometimes in pairs or with a parent, that adds up to 20...40...80kg. If it is supposed to be more than one toddler swing, then put it in the garden.

It only gets exciting when two parents are "swinging".
