Hello,
my wife and I will soon be paying off a single-family house built with lightweight expanded clay aggregate prefabricated elements and are now close to the detailed planning phase. Since the empty conduits and boxes will be cast into the structure at the factory, we already have to decide on the positions of as many switches, light sources, etc. as possible. The straight cantilever staircase from the ground floor to the attic will be attached to a 20 cm thick reinforced concrete wall, which is to remain unplastered on this side. Along the staircase, we would like to have 4-5 recessed spotlights that should provide indirect lighting for the stair treads.
No problem so far, but: The spotlights should be positioned exactly above one step or exactly between two steps. The staircase will only be installed after the wall is completed (oh, really…). But if the position and thus also the height of the recessed spotlights are fixed already—because they are cast in at the factory—it might be problematic to install the stair treads in such a way that everything fits together.
I have now come up with a solution for which I would like to get your expert feedback:
Once the staircase is hanging, holes will be drilled through the wall from the staircase side at the chosen spotlight positions. The wiring of the spotlights and chipping out the wall can then be done on the back side of this wall without damaging the front. This way, no empty boxes would have to be reserved during the casting of the wall whose positions might not match the staircase.
Can this work? Or am I mistaken? Do you know a better solution?
Regards,

Hello,

Congratulations on the mountain of debt ;-)

My professional advice is only half, as I am neither an electrician nor a mason, only a planner. I would determine the exact position of the recessed spotlights, select the spot you want to install, and make sure there is a housing available for it that can be installed. This should then be installed by the masons who pour the concrete. However, you also have to consider where the conduit pipes (for electricity) should go.

Retrofitting in exposed concrete is rarely good ;-(

Good luck

We had thought about it too... and for exactly that reason abandoned it again. Afterwards, you have to fill the holes because the steps don't fit exactly, and then? wasted money...

Ok, thanks for the opinions. I'll leave it for now and will meanwhile think about indirect lighting of the wall instead of the stairs using recessed spotlights on the ceiling.
