Hello to all woodworkers!
Since I will soon be purchasing a new kitchen and the budget has already been heavily strained by the house construction, I am asking for your help. My idea is to buy the carcasses for the kitchen at Ikea. However, only the basic elements with the drawers, without fronts. This is also because my better half cannot warm up to any "IKEA front." What bothers us a lot, however, is the white melamine edge on the carcasses, which would clash ugly with the planned dark fronts. Now to my actual question: Is it possible and sensible to remove the white edges (planing, routing, cutting) and glue on a 1mm thick ABS edge band? Or does this not make sense overall (working time and material costs)? Some additional supplemental elements would have to be custom made anyway, because they are not available at IKEA. I keep hearing from cabinetmakers that they buy the carcasses at IKEA and modify them. Others think nothing of this variant and build the carcasses themselves from scratch. By the way, my workshop is equipped with a complete machine park (including an edge-banding machine), so technically this would not be a problem. Questions upon questions – maybe you could help me a bit in my indecision and give me some tips. Many thanks in advance!
