Is peace possible in the house despite an unprotected railway crossing (honking)?

Hello,

we were able to reserve a plot of land in a new development area in the catchment area of [Nürnberg] as a backup.

Everything fits except for one thing that gives me a stomach ache: next to the development area (about 150m from our potential plot) a regional train passes over unprotected level crossings and honks before each one. I fear that the honking will be heard inside the house and disturb sleep.

The neighbors we spoke to who have lived there for a long time said they do not notice the honking at all. They looked at us incredulously when we asked about it :-) The noise report assumes no noise emission from the railway line. But I think that refers to the driving noise, which is actually almost inaudible, and not to the honking.

During the day I do not consider the honking disturbing. It fits the rural area. But my wish is to have the house as a retreat, where there is peace from everything outside, including the honking.

Do you have any experience whether such train honking can be "blocked out" by suitable wall construction, central controlled residential ventilation, and soundproof windows? Or is that too loud to be muffled?

Thank you very much for your opinions
Jo

Certainly, that will be heard. But you can build accordingly, right? Sand-lime bricks and soundproof windows are mandatory there. Under no circumstances use Poroton or Ytong, these building materials do not offer more soundproofing than a tent.

Well, a bit more than just a tent. And do trains even run there at night or is it quiet from 10 pm anyway?

I thought the same as Karsten right away... Regional train combined with an unprotected railway crossing, there can't be that much traffic (1x per hour?). And at night, not at all. I also can't imagine it being so pervasive that you actually notice it. We can't even hear our landline phone on the ground floor... besides, you have to pay attention to the wind direction: where do the tracks lie in relation to the property? Otherwise: go there, spend some time, play around a bit on the property and try not to concentrate on the honking... then, will you still hear it negatively?

150m is really nothing, the house should actually be shaking from the driving noise. We have a highway 10km away and depending on the wind it is still clearly audible, but only outside.

This is really totally exaggerated now. As and have pointed out, firstly the frequency of trains will be correspondingly low and secondly the regional trains will not be incredibly loud either. We have a property that is 125 m away from the railway line on which very, very nasty freight trains also run. Even those do not cause anything to shake. Seriously perceiving a highway from 10 km away even under corresponding wind conditions? I honestly can’t imagine that.
