Is peace possible in the house despite an unprotected railway crossing (honking)?

What I have taken from here and other threads would be the measures bedroom on the side of the house away from it, sand-lime brick walls, mineral wool ETICS, central controlled residential ventilation, special roller shutter boxes and soundproof windows class 3 or 4. Do roller shutters instead of Venetian blinds help regarding soundproofing? How was your soundproofing in the previous house? What is your assessment, could the honking noise have been reduced with further soundproofing measures on the house so that it no longer disturbed your wife?

Very unlikely. When the children were small, she reacted to every noise. As the children grew older, she kept it up.

So I have no idea about the sound insulation. But I once lived for a year in an apartment from the 60s. With a direct view of the tracks. I am really bad at estimating but definitely less than 50 m away. An hourly regional train and much less often a freight train. They also honked. I am actually quite sensitive but after a short time I no longer heard the trains. I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's more annoying when the neighbor takes out the lawn mower or the shredder at 8 in the morning.

Yes, but please don’t forget that old houses can be really great in terms of soundproofing! They used a lot of mass... Thermal insulation often a catastrophe but acoustically not that bad at all

Whether honking or not, it actually seems to be a very good idea in general to dig deep into the soundproofing trick box :) already wrote that.

How do you see the roof shape? Does one have advantages over another regarding soundproofing? I can imagine that a flat roof is advantageous because it does not present a thin, low-mass sloped surface to the sound waves traveling over the land. Green roofing probably helps too.
